Stainless landmark glows golden

Challenge

Goldman Sachs Tower required sustainable and high-quality façade that looks absolutely identical in all conditions and from all angles.

Solution

Durable and beautiful, stainless steel offers a timeless solution. Outokumpu Supra with Deco Linen was used in the tower’s cladding. The Deco Linen finish delivers a blend of brightness and reduced reflectivity with a truly homogenous surface.

Delivery

Steel grade: 400 metric tonnes of Outokumpu Supra 316L/4404 in 1,500 mm panels
Surface finish: Deco Linen

As elegant as a well-tailored suit, the Goldman Sachs Tower is a landmark property on New York City’s Lower Manhattan skyline. Overlooking the Hudson River, the 44-story building serves as the headquarters of an internationally known investment banking firm. Designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, the Goldman Sachs building is at first glance coolly understated. But as the rays of the setting sun touch it each evening, the building’s uniquely finished stainless steel exterior emits a surprisingly warm glow.

Beauty with staying power

Completed in 2009, the Goldman Sachs Tower is a classic example of the use of stainless steel cladding on high-rise buildings. Durable and beautiful, stainless steel offers a timeless solution. For the Goldman Sachs Tower, Outokumpu furnished 400 metric tonnes of Supra in 1,500 mm panels. The Deco Linen finish delivers a blend of brightness and reduced reflectivity with a truly homogenous surface. A subtle plaid pattern enhances the effect.

Outokumpu worked closely with the architects and the panel producer, Permasteelisa Group, to develop the desired finish. Rigorous quality standards ensured that the panels are relentlessly uniform. There are no streaks or shadows; the panels look absolutely identical in all conditions and from all angles.

Committing to sustainability

The Goldman Sachs Tower received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification. Among its sustainable features: an innovative eco-friendly underfloor air system that improves the effectiveness of the building’s ventilation system.

That commitment to sustainability is echoed in the choice of fully recyclable stainless steel cladding. The initial cost may be higher, but total life-cycle costs are significantly lower. Properly specified stainless steel can provide 100-plus years of service with minimal maintenance – and that is an important consideration for owners and for developers.

Recommended products and insights

Supra

The Supra range contains stainless steel products designed for highly corrosive environments.
